Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS): A modification to the Maslach Burnout Inventory that measures respondents' relationships with their work on a continuum from engagement to burnout.*

  • Exhaustion: The Exhaustion items include references to fatigue, but do not make direct reference to people as the source of those feelings.*

  • Cynicism: The new Cynicism items reflect indifference or a distant attitude towards work*

  • Efficacy: The Professional Efficacy factor is similar in many ways to Personal Accomplishment as measured by the MBI-HSS. However, in addition to a broader focus, encompassing both social and nonsocial aspects of occupational accomplishments . . . While it includes satisfaction with past and present accomplishments, it explicitly assesses an individual's expectations of continued effectiveness at work.*

Stress: The negative tension brought about by the balance of newsroom duties and family/home life.

Newsroom Stressers: Meeting newspaper deadlines, pressure to produce good work, low pay, media competition, long hours, implementing new technology, and conflict between work and family.

Affects of Burnout: Inadequate job performance, poor job satisfaction and work and family relationships, which in turn can lead to diminished productivity and employee turnover.
